The simulation hypothesis is disprovable. Whatever is simulating will have a limit. We could push and push and push until this limit is reached. At which point the simulation would break down. There would also be glitches.
It's a legitimate explanation for our existence because it can be disproved.

The biggest secret is this.
In the future they will be able to use all the information on the internet to create a very accurate portrait of those that started their lives in the run up to and the invention of the digital world.
Using this information, the Boffins of the future create a simulator enabling a very excellent trip back to the past where they play US in this video game/Educational tool.
This will be a persistent world in which they can can witness the life of you, their great,Great X20 Grandad in real time and actually see what they did and how their lives really were.
As this is a persistent world, the 'characters' live out their lives in a fully fleshed world destined to repeat the same life over and over again.
Occasionally, they the viewer/Player rewinds a little to catch a specific moment in time, causing the already played information, stored in the cache to feed back in to the artificial reality causing the 'Character ' to have a 'deja vu' experience.
Occasionally , they will jump in to a different time frame altogether, causing two people from different time zones seeing each other for a moment through the veil of time, and declaring one to say " I have seen a vision' and the other to say, ' I have seen a Ghost'
The real secret is that none of these characters are aware that they are just a history lesson for some 12 year olds in a VR game...

They knocked off the "uni" before adding the "multi", so the basic statement of the theory is that the universe is a multiverse.
I suppose they could have used multisubuniverse, but sometimes brevity is of value.

"The universe" is all that exists (time & space) following the/our big bang. That encompasses and is limited to all WE can see.
There is no law requiring that "our" big bang and all it created was a unique event.
If others occurred, they didn't occur anywhere within "our" universe and in "our" time, but, like describing certain quantum events, the restrictions in our understanding and subsequent language with which to explain them does not mean they are impossible.
